The Tongariro Crossing is a 19.4km day walk that passes Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Taranaki. It took us just under 7 hours, which included plenty of snack and sandwich stops. Unfortunately on the day we visited there was a pretty dense fog around the area. Occasionally it lifted and we caught glimpses of the mountains, the emerald lakes and the blue lake. But really it was just pretty damn foggy and we were left buying postcards of the more scenic parts of the walk.
The walk itself probably deserves a whole post of it’s own and when i’m organised and in a country with a good internet connection I will get round to writing it! For now here is a video we made on the day:
